Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Hunting Gear List

KUIU Staff

No sheep species in North America are more diverse for terrain and weather conditions than the Rocky Mountain Bighorn. From hot early season high alpine hunts to punishing cold late-season rut hunts, nothing will test you and your gear like the places OVIS Canadensis call home.

A Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep stands poised in a talus field.

Ranking as the largest in both body and horn size of the four different species of North American sheep, they can be found spread across most western states, ranging as far south as Mexico and extending north up into British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.

Due to the extremely limited number of tags and hunting opportunities, Bighorn Sheep are arguably the most coveted species in North America. Most bighorn licenses are acquired through the various state lottery systems with less than single digit draw odds. It can take decades to acquire enough points to even have a shot at pulling a tag.

Those few tags that are available to purchase outside of the draws, can easily exceed six figures and are out of reach for most people. So, whether you’re cashing in a lifetime of points you’ve built or mortgaging your house to pay for that once in a lifetime hunt, you want to be meticulous in your gear selection.

Typically seasons start as early as August where temps can push a triple-digit heat index and run into December when it can plummet to well below freezing. Most Bighorn seasons are conducted in the months of September and October, so for the purpose of this gear list we will concentrate on those time frames.

There are many factors that can go into having a successful sheep hunt. Obviously physical and mental preparation should be at the top of the list, but having the right gear selected for the time of year and area you’re hunting can be just as important.

Whether you’re going in on horseback or embarking on an unsupported backpack style hunt, you could encounter a lot of different weather conditions during these months and need to pack accordingly.

Weather variables will dictate your specific clothing and gear needs. As with any backcountry mountain hunting trip, weight should always be a factor in your selection. Ounces add into pounds quickly and when you’re the one carrying it, you will question every item you’ve brought.

Balancing weight, versus need, versus want, is vital for these types of trips. It’s important to have a system in place that breaks down this balance of weight vs. reward, so that you can get the most out of each item.

On a hunt like this, it’s critical to choose a skin to shell layering system that allows you the ability to flex with the temperatures, varying weather conditions and hunt activity levels you’re likely to encounter.
